In 1962, scientists Francis Crick, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine/Physiology for their 1953 discovery of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) structure. Scientist Rosalind Franklin is noted for contributing to this discovery, but died of cervical cancer prior to its recognition
